The Hate Next Door
Trauma can force people to regress. Children might become more scared or clingy, and adults might become more withdrawn or grumpy, family members might start to take their anger on each other, and different communities might resort to the “in-group, out-group” mentality and see one another as enemies.
The recent waves of hate, bigotry and racial tension have added tremendous negative energy to the stress of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a psychiatrist, I have seen a sharp increase in anxiety, depression, substance use, child abuse, domestic violence and family dysfunction. We tend to take our restless energy on those seen as easy “targets” , unfortunately including family members and minorities.
